Frequently asked questions

  • How do I upgrade the fire performance of the existing concrete structure of a building I am refurbishing for change of use?

Promat SUPALUX®, a thin lightweight board product and Cafco MANDOLITE ® CP2, a lightweight cementitious spray, can both be used to upgrade the fire performance of concrete structures. Promat SUPALUX® can be fixed directly to concrete columns to upgrade the fire performance to 120 minutes and Cafco MANDOLITE® CP2 can be spray applied to concrete columns, beams and floors to upgrade the fire performance to 240 minutes.  For more details please contact Technical Services.

  • I have new steelwork and don’t have much clearance for the fire protection, what options are there?

Promat PROMATECT®-250 is a thin lightweight board product which can be used for this application to provide up to 120 minutes fire protection to steel. A single layer of 15mm PROMATECT®-250 can provide 60 minutes fire resistance to most steel sizes. It is installed as a single layer with, typically, only a 3mm gap between the steel and the casing, no additional space is required. In this instance, the fire protection to the steel would only require 20mm clearance around the steel section. For more details please contact Technical Services

  • During a refurbishment I have new steelwork which requires fire protection but this will be left exposed to the weather for a period of time. Will this be a problem?

Promat SUPALUX® is a thin lightweight board product which can be used for this application to provide up to 120 minutes fire protection to steel. It can be used in semi-exposed locations without additional treatment and can be left fully exposed to the weather for short periods of time during the construction process. For more details please contact Technical Services.

  • I need to introduce some compartment walls but don’t have much space. What are the thinnest partitions you can offer ?

Promat SUPALUX® can be used to create frameless partitions up to 5m high and providing up to 240 minutes fire resistance. A 120 minute frameless partition is only 50mm thick. For more details please contact Technical Services.

  • During a refurbishment, many holes have been cut through compartment walls and floors for new heating and ventilation systems. How can I restore the fire resistance these walls are providing?

  • I am refurbishing a building and have a number of timber floors which now need to provide fire resistance but the existing ceilings cannot be disturbed or there is only access from above. How can I meet Fire Regulations?

Promat SUPALUX® can be used for this application. The installation requires the floorboards to be lifted, Promat SUPALUX® boards installed between the joists along with insulation (if required) and the floorboards replaced. This provides fire resistance from below but allows all the work to be carried out from above. For more details please contact Technical Services.

Promat TL Board® is a composite panel comprising of a non-combustible face board bonded to a high performance phenolic insulation. It is installed on the underside of concrete floors to improve the thermal performance. U-Values down to 0.15 W/m2K can be achieved using standard product and thermally efficient fixings.

Promat TLFR Board® is a composite panel comprising of a non-combustible face board bonded to non-combustible stone wool insulation. It is installed on the underside of concrete floors to improve both the fire and thermal performance. It is possible to upgrade the fire performance of the concrete floor to 180 minutes and achieve a U-Value of 0.20 W/m2K using standard product and stainless steel fixings.
